There’s a new product on the list of foods that could be possibly infected with Listeria: frozen waffles. According to a press release provided by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), TreeHouse Foods just recently announced a voluntary recall of specific waffle items due to prospective contamination of Listeria monocytogenes. “Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and often deadly infections in children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened body immune systems,” the recall states.
The recalled products were dispersed throughout North America– including the United States and Canada– under trademark name such as Breakfast Best, Schnucks, SE Grocers, and more. The distributed items can be found at chain grocery stores like Aldi, Target, Costco, and Walmart. Frozen Waffles Recall: Which Products Are Affected?
While there are no validated cases of Listeria from the remembered items, the FDA recommends that consumers examine their freezers for any of the 85 items potentially polluted with Listeria. The items can be identified by their Universal Product Code (UPC) noted below the barcode on each item.
Who’s Most Vulnerable?
Listeria can trigger symptoms such as fever, muscle pains, and nausea, and pregnant individuals need to be especially mindful. Before you toss those frozen waffles in the toaster, be sure to check whether they’re impacted by the voluntary recall.
